Agriculture & Economic Development
Growing Communities. Building Economies.
From bamboo seedlings to coffee factories, from basket-weaving expos to market stalls — the Veronica Maina Foundation is building a diversified, resilient economy across Murang'a County.
Sustainable Agriculture
Bamboo 4 Kenya — Ecology Meets Economy
Murang'a County continues to shine as a beacon of innovation through sustainable agriculture. One standout example is Bamboo 4 Kenya — a dynamic community-based organisation making remarkable strides in transforming lives, particularly among grassroots women and youth.
Through the cultivation and distribution of high-quality bamboo seedlings, this initiative is championing the dual goals of ecological preservation and economic empowerment. Bamboo improves soil health, combats deforestation, and serves as a renewable, eco-friendly alternative to traditional timber.
Beyond bamboo, the initiative also supplies a diverse variety of fruit trees — including Hass Avocado, Tangerine, and Custard Apple — providing both nutritional value and long-term economic benefits. Local farmers can generate income from their produce and participate more fully in value-added agricultural markets.
Women and youth in Murang'a are being trained in cultivation techniques, land management, and agribusiness fundamentals — enabling economic independence and active contribution to regional development.

Coffee Revival
Revival of Kimuri Coffee Factory: A Beacon of Hope
The motion to revive the Kimuri Coffee Factory finally bore fruit — a significant triumph for Murang'a County and a testament to Senator Veronica Maina's tireless advocacy. The factory is now on the path to recovery.
The journey began with a series of key questions posed to the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs, Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya, in the Senate by Senator Veronica Maina. The objective was clear: to bring attention to the plight of local farmers and the dormant factory, which had been a cornerstone of the community's economy in Kairi Village, Kahumbu Ward, Kigumo Constituency.
Senator Veronica Maina visited the factory to assess progress firsthand. The factory, which had been lying dormant for far too long, is now buzzing with renewed energy and activity — a direct result of concerted advocacy efforts in the Senate.
With the factory up and running, the community can expect increased economic activity, job creation, a reliable market for farmers' coffee, and improved living standards for residents — a shining example of what can be achieved when leadership and community work together towards a common goal.

Market Engagement & Trader Support
Local markets are the beating heart of Kenya's rural economy — vibrant centres of trade, social interaction, and community resilience. Recognizing their crucial role in sustaining livelihoods, the Veronica Maina Foundation has undertaken a strategic initiative focused on market visits and empowering local traders across Murang'a County.
This grassroots-driven programme supports small-scale traders — most of whom are women, youth, and persons with disabilities — by listening to their concerns, identifying key challenges, and delivering practical solutions to enhance their trade environments and profitability.
During market tours, Senator Veronica Maina interacts directly with vendors, mama mbogas, boda boda riders, artisans, and local business owners — taking time to understand their lived realities and encourage a spirit of self-reliance, innovation, and enterprise.
The initiative has already delivered wide impact: hundreds of small traders have benefited from financial aid, mentorship, and access to new business opportunities. Vendors have been equipped with aprons, umbrellas, and essential market supplies to improve their working conditions and professionalism.
“When you uplift the local market woman, the young boda boda rider, or the small-scale trader, you are uplifting a family, a community, and the entire nation.” — Senator Veronica Maina
